Daniel 9:27 Grossly Mistranslated in Modern English Bible Translations — 16 Comments

  1. The book of Daniel is plain as day and leaves no room for any private interpretation as to who confirms and breaks the covenant in Daniel chapter 9:27. Clearly from reading verse 9:27 the same person who will stop the **daily sacrifice** will be the same person that confirms the covenant. Daniel chapter 8 verse 11 (Yea, he (little horn) magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by **him** the daily sacrifice was **taken away** and the place of his sanctuary was cast down) and also in chapter 11 verse 31 (And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall **take away the daily sacrifice**, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. And to top it all off Daniel asks in chapter 12 when shall be the end of all these things, and he replies (I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that ….when he (little horn/antichrist/ prince that shall come) shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished…the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end…And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away (by the antichrist), and the abomination that maketh desolate set up (by the antichrist) , there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days….But go thou thy way till the end be : for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days. (Daniel 12:7,9,11,13) Surely you’re not trying to say that the whole book of Daniel is already fulfilled.

    • Your thinking is influenced by modern day eschatology which falls under the classification of Futurism. Up till the beginning of the 19th century Daniel 9:27 was considered a Messianic prophecy by ALL Protestant Bible commentators. It was fulfilled by none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. Please see other articles on this website about Daniel 9:27.

      • These articles are somewhat confusing considering the main focus is on Jesus being the one that confirmed the covenant which is very conflicting considering the whole book of Daniel teaches the daily sacrifice is taken away by the antichrist and not Jesus. This is a major conflicting point which has not been addressed in these articles. Also we have the major problem with the timing of the abominable of desolation. Jesus put it in the future. But if we put it in the past being the Romans who desolated Jerusalem then we have major problems 1. That’s by no means the end of the world 2. Can we really say that those days were the worst days ever since there was a nation? (Considering we’ve now had two world wars) 3. If Jesus confirmed a 7 year Covenant presumably around 27ad at the start of his ministry then it seems the prophecy was way out, Daniel 9:27 Daniel 8:11-13 Daniel 11:31 and Daniel 12:11 all teach that when the daily sacrifice is taken away the abomination of desolation will placed and last till the consumption of the 70 weeks at the end of the 7 years. Once again If it was Jesus who confirmed this covenant then it clearly doesn’t fit because it would be 40+ years later that the Romans destroyed Jerusalem which by no means fits into a 7 year covenant. Until these major issues are addressed, which as far as I can understand have not been since the early Protestants came up with these ideas, then the future interpretation is by far the strongest. It seems people have been wrangling and tangling with the scriptures in a desperate attempt for years to make the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church fit into their endtime view and never address the major issues with that interpretation.

        • I understand why you would think the way you do. I did too for 40 plus years! I was swayed by the Jesuit false doctrines that threw the 70th Week of Daniel into the unknown future for the purpose of Protestant Christians getting their eyes off the office of the papacy and the Pope as the antichrist of 2 Thess 2:3-4 ¶Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4  Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Charles Spurgeon and ALL other real men of God believed the “temple of God” in verse 4 represented the CHURCH, the Christian world which the Pope, the man of perdition, claims to be the head of. The Pope claims to be Jesus Christ on earth and therefore he perfectly fits the name antiChrist because the word “anti” from Greek can also mean “in place of”. There used to be what is known as antipopes. An antipope was not against the concept of a pope, he claimed to BE THE POPE when there was already somebody else sitting on the Pope thrown in Rome.
The events of Daniel 11 are NOT the same as Daniel 9:27 or Matthew 24. Please see https://www.jamesjpn.net/eschatology/daniel-11-fulfilled-before-christ/ The second part of Daniel 9:27 is covered completely in Matthew 24. Brother, I am not going to repeat to you all the reasons why I came to reject Futurism for I wrote them all down in many articles on my website. If you are interested in why I see what I see now, please read those articles. Here’s a good one: https://www.jamesjpn.net/eschatology/the-70th-week-of-daniel-delusion/ It was a very looong road for me to arrive at the conclusions I have. You can call me a heretic if you want. If so, you may call all the other great Protestant reformers heretics as well. They all believed about Daniel 9:27 and Matthew 24 like I do. The Apostle Paul himself confirmed that Jesus, not Antichrist, confirmed the Covenant: Galatians 3:17  And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in CHRIST,…

  2. I am very interested in different views of interpretation so have thoroughly read through the two articles you provided in the links given. However it’s very clear that if you interpret Jesus as being the one that confirmed the covenant in Daniel 9:27 then it leaves the door open to some pretty wild interpretation. You are quite right about covenant being mentioned in Daniel 9 verse 4. When we look at the original scriptures concerning the covenant in the bible then we can clearly see why this issue with the covenant here in Daniel chapter 9 is so important. It is important because the “true prince of the covenant” is Jesus and so it says in the book of Genesis chapter 17 verse 19 (And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bare thee a Son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish **confirm** my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him) This covenant that God originally made with Abraham was established or in other words confirmed through Isaac or in other words Abraham’s seed which in actual fact is Jesus, Isaac being a Christ like figure because Isaac was at that time Abraham’s only begotten son. So the seed in this prophecy is Jesus God’s only begotten Son through the lineage of Abraham down to Mary who was a virgin like as Sarah was barren and had a Son in old age (ninety years old = Miraculous) The covenant is as it says an everlasting covenant that only Jesus could ever make with God on behalf of mankind. So when we enter into the kingdom of God through Jesus the door then we are entering into an everlasting covenant that can never be broken. When Abraham and the children of Israel were promised the promised land it was always upon the agreement (Covenant) that God first stated to Abraham in Genesis 17:1 which says be thou perfect and walk before me, so it is then that you will receive the blessings whether it be the promised land or the kingdom of God the terms of the agreement is and always will be “be thou perfect and walk before me” which Only Jesus has ever done, only Jesus has ever been perfect and walked before God without falling short of the glory of God, and still does. So the terms of the covenant can only be confirmed or established through Jesus and therefore by having Jesus in our hearts through true salvation, by being truly born again, by being a new creature in Christ Jesus, having our sins covered and then we can be perfect and walk before God when God sees Jesus in us.

    • Well said, Daniel. Thank you for confirming that the first half of Galatians 3:17 is the mate of the first half of Daniel 9:27.
Daniel 9:27  And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:
Galatians 3:17  And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ,

      • Genesis 17:19

19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
        NIV

        Galatians 3:16-17
The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.
        NIV

SCRIPTURE MUST BE TAKEN INTO CONTEXT. GENESIS 17:19 WILL APPEAR TO BE REFEREEING TO AN IMMEDIATE FUTURE YET WE NOW SEE THAT IT SPOKE OF A VERY DISTANT FUTURE THE DAYS OF THE MESSIAH.

THIS VERY PRINCIPLE SHOULD BE APPLIED IN MATTHEW 24 WHEN SCRIPTURES SAY, `THIS GENERATION WILL NOT PASS UNTIL ALL THIS COMES TO PASS` THE QUESTION IS DID ALL THAT IS PREDICTED IN MATTHEW 24 COME TO PASS IN THE FIRST CENTURY AD? IF NO THEN HE IS SPEAKING TO A DISTANT FUTURE. THE TROUBLING VERSE WILL BE MATTHEW 24:29-31 DID IT COME TO PASS BEFORE THE GENERATION OF JESUS?

  3. The angel in Daniel chapter 9 comes in answer to Daniels prayer concerning both their physical and spiritually desolate state. Though God will never break His part of the agreement, Daniel in his prayer is confessing and praying for the spiritually desolate state his people were in having as he said transgressed against the law and broken their agreement with God. Daniel was hoping for full restoration, for his people to get totally back to God. But The Angel Gabriel comes and doesn’t quite paint the picture that Daniel imagined, instead he says will be a period of 49 years in which indeed God’s people did physically return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple, city and wall etc..so we see a partial fulfilment of Daniels prayer although spiritually ultimately not fulfilled as only through Jesus can we confirm the true covenant of God and get totally back to God. Following on from this the Angel said would follow another period of 434 years bringing us to “Messiah the prince” whom the Angel said would be “cut off” because instead of receiving Jesus and confirming the true covenant they cut of their own head and crucified him! From that time on they once again went into spiritual desolation and having murdered the true prince of the covenant in the sight of God they ceased to be his people. And so the oath as written in the law came upon them once again, the wrath of God came upon them to the uttermost and as the angel prophesied after “messiah shall be cut off” their city and the sanctuary would be destroyed, and desolations would be determined. As we all know all these things came to pass, they were murdered, scattered and crucified by the Romans. And now after all these years the Jews are still awaiting their messiah to confirm the covenant, to get back to full restoration, to get back to God and so God is going to allow them to restore themselves at the very end of the World, by the king that they will worship & the king that they always wanted. They crucified the true prince of the covenant Jesus, but As a final nail in the coffin He will allow them to restore themselves to full power under the false messiah‚ this prince that shall come, the Antichrist for the last 7 years!

  4. There’s no getting around it! It’s gonna happen! There’s only one interpretation that fits with all the prophecies of Daniel all coming together perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle. Each chapter of Daniel expanding upon the last adding more detail every time, chapter 2 showing us that the stone Jesus Christ will smash the image of man’s greatest governments upon its feet and 10 toes (10 kings) at the end of the world, chapter 7 showing us the coming of a little horn the antichrist who unites all these 10 kings but will be destroyed by Jesus, chapter 8 showing us the very location and time the little horn or antichrist will arise (at the last end of the indignation, at the time of the end) chapter 9 showing a clear picture of events that are to follow the Jews and how they having crucified the true messiah will receive this false prince this little horn prophesied to come whom they will proclaim their messiah! The antichrist! Which both Daniel 8,9,11 and 12 makes perfectly clear being a phoney and a fake will break the covenant and go back on his word and take away worship of the one true God, whether that worship is in true faith in Jesus Christ the only way to God or whether it’s through the works of the law (daily sacrifice) or whether it’s through Mohamed or any other god, he opposes all that is called God or that is worshipped so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God showing himself that he is God. The antichrist breaks the covenant in the middle of the last seven years of world history bringing us into what Jesus called the great tribulation after which Jesus will return in the clouds of heaven. He told us “For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day. But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation” Luke 17:24-25

  5. This is the only interpretation that fits and doesn’t leave massive holes that can’t be filled without forcing some ridiculous historical events of Antiochus into something so grand as this, we just have to stop and think for a second did the Angel Gabriel, Micheal and even Jesus himself in these visions come from their busy schedule to talk about someone so little as Antiochus epiphanes? Was the abomination of desolation in Daniel 11 Really talking about that tiny little event which hardly got any mention in the history books? Why try make something fit that clearly Doesn’t? Forcing him into these verses in Daniel 8 and 11 is damaging to the flow of the whole book and just plain madness. Certain key words constantly surface in the book of Daniel and they serve as links for us to join everything together. The daily sacrifice comes up 5 times in the book of Daniel and every single time it says it’s taken away by the Little horn/Antichrist **that shall come** and of the 5 times the word covenant comes up from Daniel 9:27 onwards they’re all talking about this **prince that shall come**, this phoney and fake prince of the covenant that comes in by flattery, this little horn, this man of sin, the antichrist that will take away the daily sacrifice and bring not only the Jews but the whole world into spiritual desolation! The belief in the futurist Interpretation dates back way before the Jesuits, if you read Hippolytus of Rome who died around 235BC you’ll see he followed this same interpretation of the Antichrist to come who will confirm the covenant for 7 years. All being said the most important thing is that Jesus is the true Prince of the covenant and the only way into the promised land or the kingdom of God is through Him – the true Seed of Abraham. Jesus’ feet will eventually touch down upon the mount of olives and rule over the whole of Israel and even the whole earth and then and only then will there be an end of sins, and reconciliation for iniquity, and everlasting righteousness and to anoint Jesus Christ the true king of kings, the true prince of the covenant! Who will rule this world 1000 years! Praise Jesus!

  6. I am in total agreement with you that this was referring to the Messiah and things that have already passed.

However, most Christians will not agree because they would have to let go of the their 7 year tribulation teaching and pre-tribulation rapture.

This is a doctrine that makes them feel comfortable thinking they will escape end time tribulation and be whisked away, leaving everyone else to suffer. They won’t want to give that up.

    • Thank you Brian for your input. It is indeed sad that Christians prefer a comfortable lie rather than the truth. They are ignorant of Church history. Christians were not only persecuted by the emperors of Rome, they were persecuted by Roman Popes over a period of 1260 years. They were not spared from persecution and yet contemporary Christians think they will be.

  7. Matthew 24:29-35

29 “Soon after the trouble of those days, the sun will grow dark, the moon will no longer shine, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers in space will be driven from their courses. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky; and all the peoples of earth will weep as they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 The great trumpet will sound, and he will send out his angels to the four corners of the earth, and they will gather his chosen people from one end of the world to the other – see ALSO Luke 21:25-28

The Lesson of the Fig Tree
    (Mark 13:28-31; Luke 21:29-33)

32 “Let the fig tree teach you a lesson. When its branches become green and tender and it starts putting out leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, you will know that the time is near, ready to begin. 34 Remember that all these things will happen before the people now living have all died. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
    GNT

IF VERSE 34 WAS TALKING ABOUT JEWS OF THE FIRST CENTURY, THEN DID THEY TOGETHER WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD SEE EVENTS OF VERSE 30 JESUS COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN?

    • The rebellious Christ-rejecting Jews of the First Century DID see Jesus coming in the clouds of heaven! That was the sign of Heaven during the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD.

Mark 14:61  But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
62  And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Jesus was speaking to the High Priest when He said that! That High Priest together with that generation saw Him in the sky during the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD by the Roman army!! They KNEW Jesus Christ Himself was behind the destruction of the Jews for rejecting Him and murdering the Author of Life on a cross made of wood.

Luke 21:22  For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

  8. I’m with you on almost all of this, so thank you for your effort and time. However there are some things I’d like to add to this if I may.

    1. Ezekiel gives a punishment to Ephraim (israel) and Judah. Israel gets 390 years and Judah gets 40. In deuteronomy the punishment is extended by a multiple of 7 if they dont repent during their exile. Israel did not so they get 390×7 = 2730 years which takes us to approx 2008-2010 AD. This shows an explanation for the last 2000 years since yeshua’s death.

    2. The entire history of mankind is built around a week where 1 day equals 1000 years so 7000 years. The 7th day or years 6000-7000 is the real Sabbath, also known as the millennium. Much of the talk about minute details in the Bible are referring to this overarching prophecy. Example: Solomon had 6 steps to his throne. The Arc of the covenant in Joshua is separated from Israel by 2000 cubits, king Josiah is hidden in the temple for 6 years, becomes king on the 7th. The birthing order of Israel’s decendents, the creation story, 2 days wage for the innkeeper, 2 days with the Samaritan woman, the 6 wine jars, etc. I could go on for hours. It all pertains to 7000 years divided up in intervals of 1000 years. Yeshuah said he would be gone for exactly 2000 years or 2 days. The wedding feast is an example of this. He left on the 4th day, and returns on the 7th day. Also refer to hosea 6.

This too accounts for the last 2000 years. Both #1 & 2 occur during the same generation of people as well. Don’t forget yeshua died and ascended in 30-33ad. It’s all converging together for the first time in the history of mankind.

Before I write off anything about the future end, I’d be cautious as we approach the last 7 years which should begin sometime between 2023-2026. If by 2029 nothing like modern Christians prophecy of the last days is happening, then I’d right off their esctalogical opinions.
