Nothing seems more astonishing than that intelligent men who have any knowledge of the Christian religion should ever imagine that gifts of property or money could blot out guilt, and cancel the record of it from the books of the judgment day. And yet nothing on earth is more certain than that this doctrine for centuries governed the leading men of Catholic Europe.
